Electric Trikes

The three-wheeled platform of a trike makes it very stable - most of the time - and eliminates the good balance requirement of a standard bicycle. Trikes are great cargo haulers too, with sturdy frames and typically equipped with at least a large rear cargo area. Just keep in mind that all this stability really only applies at lower speeds, or while traveling in a straight line; there's serious tip-over risk when turning at speed or when riding on inclines at a diagonal angle.

Electric trikes are often driven by a front hub motor because having dual rear hub motors would require significant complexity, especially when turning. Having a front hub drive works fine for most use cases, just remember that the traction up there isn't as good so it will be easy to "peel out" if you hammer on the throttle from a standstill. Good trikes will have a rear wheel differential that allows the wheels to turn at different speeds, making them much better at cornering.

The FT2 is quite sleek for a trike, with an approachable step-thru frame and highly adjustable stem. Both a rear rack and a front basket are included and they're quite sturdy, making the FT2 a capable cargo hauler, complete with fenders and lights for riding in any conditions. The speed limit is adjustable as high as 28mph, but since this is a trike we recommend keeping it down at 20mph... but hey, if you're feeling like a speed demon at least the hydraulic brakes will be able to bring this beast to a halt quickly.

Rad Power Bikes has finally added a trike to their lineup! They've put their own spin on it too; most trikes are big and bulky, but the RadTrike is relatively compact and just 33" wide which fits through standard sized doors. It can carry up to 415 pounds of weight, although - unlike most trikes - it doesn't include any cargo baskets, but you can pay extra for some at checkout (or attach your own). The drivetrain is a simple single speed, so you'll be relying on the motor quite a bit, with both pedal-assist and throttle drive modes. The RadTrike is also limited to a top speed of 14mph, lower than most trikes at 20mph... but if you've ever ridden a trike you know you probably don't want to go much over 14mph anyways. Other unique touches include the backrest-equipped seat, reverse throttle mode, and a coaster brake in the right rear wheel. Don't worry, there's also a mechanical disc brake in the front wheel!

If you want a trike that's ready for some heavy duty hauling then the 4|2 Rickshaw is definitely worth checking out. Load it up with up to 500 pounds of cargo or passengers; the passenger seat is even rocking two seatbelts for safe transportation! Oh Wow Cycles uses advanced rear wheel differentials on all their trikes, which means that the rear wheels can turn at different speeds, allowing the Rickshaw to corner pretty darn well... for a trike, anyways. Fat tires and a suspension fork provide comfort and you'll feel good riding anywhere a trike has business riding. Like all trikes the hub motor is in the front wheel which can feel a bit weird at first, but you get used to it, and when the Rickshaw is fully loaded down you shouldn't notice any wheel slip when accelerating.
