SONDORS

NOTE: SONDORS appears to be in financial trouble and may no longer be operating. I wouldn't recommend buying any of their products until there is more definite news about them.

The only thing more outlandish than SONDORS products is their wild claims about them; this is a company that over-promises extravagantly. However, even though they under-deliver relative to their claims, they still do deliver some pretty amazing products... so I'll have to let that slide. SONDORS achieved instant fame with their first e-bike way back in 2015, a fat tire monster that was briefly called the Storm Electric Bike before being renamed as just the SONDORS. Storm Sondors (the human) is the founder and used crowd funding for his first product to great success, setting records for funding levels and gaining widespread media attention due to his criticism of the popular e-bike manufacturers of the time. He claimed to be creating the "world's cheapest electric bike" that would outperform competing products for only $499, and while none of those things ended up being true and customers had a long wait to receive their bikes, it still was an impressive first product from the new company.

SONDORS made rapid improvements over the years but continued on in more-or-less the same style, funding later product lines with "too good to be true" crowd funding campaigns. Interestingly, this didn't seem to hurt the company, instead just becoming part of their brand image. Everyone who liked SONDORS products learned to take all of their marketing and delivery dates with a grain of salt, because at the end of the day you were still getting an awesome and unique electric bike for much cheaper than you would anywhere else. I got to spend a day riding their e-MTB Rockstar in 2021, and even though it weighed almost 20 pounds more than SONDORS said it would, it was (and still is) my favorite electric mountain bike ever.

SONDORS also has a poor reputation when it comes to supporting their products; many owners complain of slow responses and warranties not honored. This isn't surprising for a company that operates more like a "move fast and break things" startup, but it does make it hard for me to recommend their products, especially for first-time electric bike owners. My advice? Make sure you have a local e-bike shop that will work with you if you need maintenance and repairs. A silver lining for most SONDORS e-bikes is that they used standard, widely-available components. They're also some of the easiest e-bikes to repair, modify, and upgrade on your own! This, coupled with their relatively cheap prices and sturdy frames, makes them a popular choice for DIY-minded riders who heavily customize their bikes over the years.
